Post navigation.
The info you need is in this post. I'll start compiling the info in order. The basic gist of it is.
Download firmware files from here. Extract Firmware files from MSI using command prompt (this website will tell you how to do it ). Download a server software and install. (free server software here ). Copy Firmware Update.xml and rename 2nd copy to zuneprod.xml 5.Move firmware files to Server Root directory (if using the above software the root dir is 'HTDocs') 6.edit zuneprod.xml by searching for 'url' and add server IP address to every instance of url you find.
The finished path will look like 'url= ' 7.edit HOSTS file ( located in%SystemRoot% System32 drivers etc ) to redirect resources.zune.net to 127.0.0.1 by adding the line '127.0.0.1 resources.zune.net' The best way to edit this is to open Notepad as Administrator and within Notepad navigate to the path above. Edit: I can take no credit, the 2 users who figured this out are TheEvilLightBulb and Ferrango. They traced where the zune software was trying to download the firmware and figured out the key file is zune prod.xml and edited that file to point to the files. I tested it on my zune HD this morning and it worked. Edit I'm an moron and instructed you guys to use a instead of / in the editing url section of the zuneprod.xml file I've uploaded the extracted Zune firmware files and edited the zune prod already to my one drive and shared the file here which will allow you to skip steps 1, 2, 4, and 6. In the firmware file I uploaded, you need to copy the Firmware files into The HTDocs folder if using the server software or place it in your servers root directory. But leave the zuneprod file in the Htdocs/firmware/v45 folder.
The reason is because the url edits we made to the zune prod file point to the files in the servers root directory. Here is an updated version version of, along with some pictures to help guide the layman. I did this with the Zune HD 16GB Download firmware files from here Extract Firmware files from MSI using command prompt (this website will tell you how to do it ) Download a server software and install. This isn't working?!
I followed all the above steps, but it is not working. I noticed there are lots of random details on the page noted above, that are not noted/specified above as part of the instructions. What little details/intricacies are missing above that would cause it not to work? Keep in mind, please, that I'm pretty novice when it comes to computer stuff, but after an entire night of trial-and-error & lots of Google searches, I managed to complete the above steps. Except for the success at the end.
Perhaps someone would allow me to telephone them so we could pin point where I went wrong or what I missed? It appears to be soooo close to working, but just missing something!???
Thank you for any consideration. FINALLY, I got it to work.
But only after discovering an error in your above instructions. Or maybe it's not an error and I just took your instructions too literal?: You say to edit zuneprod.xml by adding the following to every instance of URL that I find, 'http//resources.zune.net.cab' (the asterisks being whatever the file name was), but you show a ' ' after 'net', which is what I used, and my Zune would not update. The Zune software kept giving me an error code that Google implied was related to URL or file path, etc., type problems. I read that someone had once caused this error because he accidentially used a backslash ' 'instead of a forwardslash '/'. So I changed what you had instructed, to a forwardslash '/' after 'net', instead, and ta da, it finally worked!
So why do you show a ' ' when only a '/' worked?? I'm a total beginner with computers, and you obviously seem pretty good with them, so it doesn't seem like you'd make an obvious mistake like that; so I'm wondering if I maybe took your instructions too literal?? Just tryin' to learn here. Searching online got me to wiping the firmware on my Zune HD 32 GB on a 32 bit Win7 but I couldn't reset it properly - these instructions were a lifesaver! One note I'll make - I ran through all the steps properly on localhost and was able to reinstall the software but I never got to the part where I could rename / configure my Zune - I hit a second error screen with code c00d11cd (00000000).

The Zune software would recognize that something was plugged in but would only let me sync as a guest and when I dragged items in, it made a sync group but never actually moved to the device. I initially tried using the IP address listed below but the URL didn't seem to work.
I downloaded the RAR file from your server and noticed the difference - yours had ChopakaProduction while extracting from the microsoft link in step 1 only had the other 4 cab files. Once I moved that file into the server root folder, it worked like a charm! Thanks again! Not sure if anyone's still reading this, but I have a Zune 80 and I'm trying to update. I have the server set up, the XML in the htdocs/firmware/v45/ folder, and the cab files in htdocs/. However, when I try to update, it still returns that error. (I am able to go to resources.zune.net/firmware/v45 to see my XML file and download files using resources.zune.net/ so I think I configured the server properly.) Could there be something wrong with how I've set up the Zune sync software?
(The error I'm getting is C00D11CD 800B0100.). Well I may have spoken too soon! It seemed nothing would sync into my zune device. The PC software seems to think there's some pictures and podcasts on it, but it's empty (verified by using the device itself). Furthermore, when I try to sync things, or when I plug the zune in again (and it tries to auto-sync), I get and 'Update Error' message, code: C00D11CD (00000000) I tried hard-resetting the zune again, but get the same issue. (On a whim, I also tried extracting the 64-bit zune firmware, but I get an error when it tries to unpack!) So my zune 'works', and I can use it for a radio, but I can't get anything on it.
Any suggestions? (I've tried looking up that error code of course, but I couldn't figure out a solution.). I'm attempting to fix my friends 120g zune, and I can't seem to get it to work. I downloaded the zune firmware file with the pre edited xml file. I opened up the xml file and verified all the urls are properly edited to point towards the.cab files.
I have the zuneprod.xml file properly placed in C: Abyss Web Server htdocs firmware v45 I have the 5.cab files, Chopaka, Draco, Keel, Pavo, and Scorpius all placed in C: Abyss Web Server htdocs I've checked my abyss server and verified it's running on port 80. I also have ensured I have nothing else running on port 80. When I check port 80 in command prompt the only things I see are 2 entries for abyss server which are both just Listening, not Established. I've edited my host file as directed (even went so far as to back up original and then delete every other entry in it, my spy bot had a crap load in there). I restarted my computer because I read in a comment that possibly it doesn't pickup changes in the host file unless the comp is restarted. I still keep getting the C00D133C (80190194) error every time I try to update the zune.
I've also tried setting the host file to point at the server 52.40.100.46 mcKaskie mentioned and didn't have any luck with that either. At this point I'm at a loss. I've triple checked everything and scratching my head at what I'm missing. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
EDIT, okay figured out my problem. When editing the host file, it keeps saving as host.txt instead of overwriting the host file. I attempted to use the shortcut on desktop trick Roehcai mentioned to no avail. It's telling me I cant overwrite host file since its read only.
Going to keep working at it. May end up having to boot up in linux to edit the damn thing. I FUCKING DID IT! I feel dumb for not realizing it sooner. If anyone runs into same issue I did you can just right click on host file, and uncheck read only for its properties.
This will allow you to properly edit it. I am lost on this step, 6.edit zuneprod.xml by searching for 'url' and add server IP address to every instance of url you find. The finished path will look like 'url= ' can anyone provide a screen shot of how the url is supposed to be added, I have provided a link for how I have done mine. EDIT; have fixed everything to match what i have been able to read, and still nothing is working on my Zune 30. Is there anyone that can provide more pictures, or a youtube video? I've looked everywhere.
